What do we offer?

UMassAir and its associated academic departments offer a variety of UAS-related courses both in traditional on-campus academic programs, through UMass’ University Without Walls (UWW), and through the UMass Transportation Center’s (UMTC) educational programming. We offer courses throughout the year — spring, summer and fall semesters — taught by professional UAS pilots and faculty with expertise in unoccupied aerial systems piloting and data processing.

Current Offerings

  • Graduate Certificate in Unoccupied Aerial Systems Piloting (UMass Amherst and Mt Ida)
  • Courses on FAA 107 Pilot Certification, UAS piloting and UAS Applications through traditional on-campus academic programs of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Environmental Conservation (ECO), Geosciences (GEO), and the Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) program.

Our Goals

Our overall educational goals are to teach students:

(1) the safe and appropriate use of UAS operation;

(2) the public policy issues surrounding UAS operation;

(3) data analysis of various data products produced with UASs including true color (RGB), multispectral and thermal sensing images of the environment; and

(4) emerging UAS developments in fields such as engineering, environmental science and public policy.

Students gain instruction and experience not just through class time, but through participating in UMassAir-affiliated research.
